TVL softball honors top players

Brooke Musch has been named the Tri-Valley League softball player of the year for her role in leading Camden to an undefeated regular season, including possible state records for runs scored and stolen bases in a single season. Jed Musch was tabbed as coach of the year in leading the Blue Devils to the Pioneer Division crown. New Hartford’s Sienna Holmes was chosen as pitcher of the year, helping the Spartans to the Colonial Division title.

Musch, a junior, was the Blue Devils’ leadoff hitter and centerfielder again this season. She had 55 hits in 69 at bats for a .797 batting average. That would give her the second best single season batting average in New York state history, behind Meghan Giordano of Croton Harmon, who batted .821 in 2016 and three points ahead of FDR’s Aliya Feerick from the 2021 season. She had 10 doubles and five triples, scored 60 runs and drove in 39 runs. The run total would be a state record by two, eclipsing the record of 58 held by two players — Grace Walker of CalMum (2018) and Cierra Smith of Center Moriches (2016).

Her 66 stolen bases would also be a state record, smashing the current record of 56 set in 2008 by Tappan Zee’s Brittni Alexander. The school district will be submitting the statistics to the New York State Publie High School Athletic Association soon to verify the possible new state records.

Holmes, a senior, threw virtually every inning for the Spartans while also batting cleanup. She threw 115 of the team’s 125 innings for the 15-4-1 Spartans. She allowed 68 hits and walked 27 batters while striking out 183. She had a 1.33 ERA. She also smacked seven home runs, drove in 30 runs and batted .521.

Third-year head coach Jed Musch guided Camden to a 20-0 regular season and a 21-1 season overall. He coached five players to league all-star status — Brooke Musch, Camryn Shenk,

Kaitlyn Findlay, Ryleigh Johnson and Layla Killino. The team also had two honorable mentions in Kendall Musch and Avery Prievo.

For New Hartford, Holmes was joined as an all-star by teammates Savannah Cole, Alex Volo, and Taylor Scranton. Honorable mentions for the team are Sophia Burynski, Jenna Glenn, Victoria Gomez and Adrianna Peterson.
