Basket weaving workshop offered

The Madison County Historical Society, 435 Main St., will offer a basket weaving workshop on Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. where participants will learn basket weaving techniques to create a decorative berry basket.

The workshop led by artist Sara Buss is for beginner basket weavers who are interested in learning the techniques but are not sure where to start and also for experienced basket weavers looking for a fun workshop.

Buss will lead participants through the steps and basket weaving techniques from tapering, scarfing, and packing a basket tight to create a decorative berry basket. Basket materials provided. Space is limited to 15 participants who must be at least 9 years old.

The workshop will be held at the Madison County Historical Society.

The cost for the workshop is $40 for Madison County Historical Society members and $45 for nonmembers. Become a member of the Madison County Historical Society to receive the special workshop rate.

Prepackaged, single-serve, light refreshments will be offered. Buss, owner of Buss N’ Stuff, has been basket weaving since 2021. She participates in local craft festivals selling her baskets and offering custom orders. Buss was juried into the 2022 Madison County Craft Festival as a new artisan, the announcement said, adding that the artist plans to participate in this year’s festival, which will be held Sept. 9-10.

The Madison County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that operates both a museum and the Mary King Research Library, located at its headquarters at 435 Main St.

The society continues to preserve, collect, promote, and exhibit the history of Madison County and its fifteen towns and one city through the development of programs that enhance Madison County’s heritage.
