GOOD CHEER

Local teams win big in competition

BY CASEY PRITCHARD Staff writer

The Mavericks Competitive Cheer Program won big at nationals in Buffalo and now has its sights set on international competitions.

Erin Glazier, owner and coach at Head Over Heels Athletics in Deansboro, said on Sunday, March 13, the program’s teams all came through with big wins at the Queen City Nationals. “We’ve got five cheer teams, and all of them placed first in their division,” the coach said. “They range from tiny team, mini team, youth team, junior, and senior teams. And that ranges from ages four to 18.”

Teams have been competing since December all over the nation from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Albany, and elsewhere. “Everyone’s been so excited,” Glazier said.

And this isn’t the only win for the Mavericks. Last year, their junior team won its bid to compete in Florida this weekend, March 18-19 — an exciting trip and warm respite from New York weather. “We’re going up against teams from other countries,” she said.

The senior team won its grand championship and has a trip planned to Ohio for a national competition near the end of

April. “This has been a great year,” Glazier said. “Last year was really big for our junior team. They won grand champion everywhere we went and this almost feels like a celebration. And this year, our senior team has had a big team winning grand champion. It’s kind of funny — it’s almost like they’re competing with each other for grand champion.”

Their season ends in April, but the Mavericks have an exhibition performance planned for early May at the Accelerate Sports Complex in Whitesboro.
