Police search for suspects, stolen purse in robbery

The Rome Police Department is asking for residents living near Transfiguration Church to search their yards for evidence from the purse snatching in the church parking lot Monday evening.

Police said an 83-year-old woman had just left Mass at the Ridge Street church around 7:41 p.m. Monday when a group of about four teenage males stole her purse out of her car and fled on foot. The woman was not injured.

It is believed that the thieves may have ditched the purse at some point after the theft. Police said the purse contained several irreplaceable family heirlooms. The purse is a tan shoulder bag with no branding on it, authorities said. It has two zippers on the top and one in the back.

Police are asking residents in the following areas to search their yards, sheds, porches, bushes, trashcans and around their areas for any signs of the purse.

Search areas:

• 200 block of Henry St.;

• 400 block of West St.;

• 100 W. North St.; and

• Reifert Avenue.

Anyone who finds the purse or who has information on the thieves is asked to call the Rome Police Department tip line at 315-339-7744.

Anonymous tips can be sent to www.MohawkValleyCrimeStoppers.com or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-866-730-8477.
