Judith Wellman is a native upstate New Yorker. She has taught state history, local history, women’s history, and 19th century U.S. history at the SUNY Oswego.

In 2000, Wellman started a business called Historical New York Research Associates, focusing on social and community history, women’s history, and the Underground Railroad, with a special emphasis on historic sites. She views historical work on the Underground Railroad as a contribution to creating a future of mutual respect and justice for all people.

Before the Civil War, thousands of people traveled from slavery to freedom on what became known as the Underground Railroad, an epic movement for civil rights in America. With easy access to transportation by road, canal, and railroad, Rome became a hotspot. Here, freedom seekers found local allies and often stayed to live, work and raise their families.

On Dec. 15, Wellman will present research that confirms some Underground Railroad locations in Rome.

Join to hear their stories, ask questions, and learn how you can help carry on this work. Go online to www.historicalnewyork.net to learn more about Historical New York Research Associates and Wellman’s work.
