Colgate’s Young, Verboon earn ECAC hockey postseason awards

Colgate men’s hockey player Alex Young earned ECAC allleague first team honors and teammate Matt Verboon was tabbed as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Young has had 37 points — 20 goals and 17 assists — this season. He leads the Raiders in goals and points and is also tied for first in ECAC hockey in goals. Young is also tied for sixth in the nation in goals. He ranks fifth in the conference and tied for 14th in the country in points.

Young has tallied eight multipoint games this season, including six two-point performances and two three-point games.

The junior also has a conference-best nine power-play goals, tied for fourth-most in the nation. Young has taken 97 shots and scored three game-winning goals which is tied for the most on the team.

This is the second time in the Calgary, Alberta native’s career that he has earned postseason accolades after he was named to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman during the 2020-21 season.

Verboon was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year after excelling on and off the ice this past season. He is the first finalist and winner of the award in program history.

The senior has had a careerbest season with 34 points — 16 goals and 18 assists.

Verboon is fourth in the ECAC in goals, eighth in points and tied for 10th in assists. Additionally, he is tied for fourth-best in the league in power-play goals with six.

Off the ice, the physics major has logged a 3.69 grade-point average and is a three-time Raider Academic Honor Roll and ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team selection.

He is a dean’s list student and has participated in many research projects.

He has also participated in multiple community service efforts, such as working a threeon-three hockey tournament for Colgate’s Interfraternity Council, volunteering at the Hamilton

Food Cupboard, and being a member of the Welcoming Committee at Hamilton Central Schools.

This is the first time in his career that the Geneva, Switzerland native has earned postseason accolades.

The Raiders played Quinnipiac in the ECAC semifinals Friday. Results were not available at press time. If Colgate wins, it will take on the winner of the other semifinal match between Harvard and Cornell in the championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
